Seattle Craftsman Homes
If you want to live in a Craftsman-style home, there’s no better place than Seattle. The city has countless examples of these homes, built in the 1900s and 1930s, making them an ideal style for any fan or resident who loves Seattle’s nostalgia! Most have been passed down through generations, with many alterations occurring over time. However, they’re still loved by many locals because this type of architectural design represents where our city started out: small-time but proud beginnings on Capitol Hill alongside Queen Anne and Ravenna.

It turns out that the term “Craftsman” was coined by early 20th-century designer Gustav Stickley. He inspired this movement in England around 100 years ago, which sought to simplify homes with clean designs associated with the Arts and Crafts movement.
Craftsman-style homes resulted from a demand for new housing in the early 1900s. Craftsman homes are sometimes called bungalows. This architectural style incorporates elements of millwork, stacked moldings, and porches that jut from the front of the house. During a huge economic boom in the early 1900s, bungalow plan books and catalogs were commonly bought among residents. Seattle’s population tripled from 80,00 to 230,000 in the first decade of the 20th century. Land was cheap here; you could buy a lot of land and a do-it-yourself Craftsman Bungalow Kit with a few hundred dollars. This kit was shipped with parts numbered like a LEGO set with a detailed construction plan.
Now, these homes are in the most sought-after neighborhoods of Seattle and receive dozens of offers when they hit the market.
